[Chances are, when you enter room 1202 of the Prosecutor's Office, you'll find High Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth hard at work. He learned the hard way not to be too quick to throw people out when they interrupt him, so as annoyed as he probably will be once he notices your presence, you'll more likely than not get a sufficient chance to justify yourself. Usually.]

[To help clarify the purpose of this post, this is someplace anyone can come tag me if they want -- just start a thread and specify Canonworth, TVKworth, or any other preference! Canons, AUs, OCs, and canon OCs welcome, both AA and non-AA!]

Dammit...I can't let him be the one to tell her. Why couldn't this have happened yesterday if it had to happen?

Given that time travel is involved, is there any reason to assume that you can't return to precisely the moment you left if you so wished?

*From the way his head tilts, it's obvious he hadn't thought of that. True, time was passing outside the spacetime anomaly-induced Dive, but that was only imitation time travel. And it didn't make sense to assume that a universe that didn't seem to have the failsafe or the guardian would be younger than one that had been regularly reset...*

That's a pretty good point...if I went directly from here to the equivalent time in my own universe, I'd probably be a few thousand years too early. If that's the case, then it wouldn't really matter how long I stay here, as long as I do get out.

Given that our understanding of the situation here is still incomplete and does involve people claiming to have lost unusual abilities, however, I wouldn't recommend staying for longer than is necessary -- there's no guarantee that whatever force is responsible for our situation won't take notice of you in time.

I'll spend some time during this extra hour testing how it changes things before I jump into trying to leave. If I can afford to risk missing my first chance, I don't see why I should rush it and risk getting in an even bigger mess.

In the meantime, is there anything I could help you with to pay you back for telling me what I needed to know?

Well...I don't know much about the situation here, but dealing with information is kind of a specialty of mine. Maybe if you explain the gaps in what you understand, I could help find out what you need to know, or at least offer my own theories.

Unfortunately, the gaps are so large that it would take less time to explain what we do know than what we don't, though I'll do my best to explain both.

[Thus did the next hour become devoted to Edgeworth describing the semi-random kidnappings from across time and space, the occasional appearance of mind-influencing Shadows at the full moon and the sinister voice calling these events "tests", the hotel's suspicious free housing and how much resistance he met just in digging up a single name, what little is known about the Church of Three, the suspiciousness of ex-Senator Lis and his hand in Prospero's creation, and far more some of which the character knows and the player still doesn't months later.]

*He listens quietly through the entire explanation, leaning forward with the front of his mask resting against his hands. When Edgeworth finishes, he shakes his head.*

And here I though Ormus liked meddling. Well, I think it's already pretty obvious that the church is connected to both the government and the hotel. The only question there is whether the church is using the government or the other way around.

Indeed. I would investigate Emery Lis directly, but the risks of that route are obviously too great -- particularly if he remains active during the Dark Hour.

[temptestament]

I might be able to help with that. I have more than one way of keeping people from finding me.

Are you certain? Depending on his precise connection to the case, you may find yourself trapped here were you to fail.

[temptestament]

*He takes a moment to consider, head tilted down to look at the ground. But when he looks back up to Edgeworth, he nods.*

Things are wrong here. If I just left this situation alone, I don't think I'd be able to stop worrying about it.

Very well. Do you need any further information to begin?

[temptestament]

Are there any details about this Emery Lis that you have that didn't have to do with the explanation you already gave?

[truthsnomiracle]

While he was a senator, he represented Virginia, implying that he hails from there. He doesn't live on Prospero, but he regularly visits to aid in his son's duties as the mayor -- or, as rumors claim, to give him orders. I haven't learned where he actually lives now, due to the dangers inherent in pursuing even that detail.

[temptestament]

Then we should probably start by finding out where he lives and if those rumors are true. Do you have any reason to think either of them would be able to resist someone trying to affect their perceptions?

[truthsnomiracle]

Unfortunately, I have no idea.

[temptestament]

I wonder if this is how Ms. Uzuki feels, trying to figure out what's going on without knowing what the other group is really capable of...it's probably too dangerous to just assume I'll be able to hide from them with mental illusions, and if you can see my Imaginary form, I'll have to assume he can, too...

[truthsnomiracle]

That being said, it seems less likely that his allies would possess such capabilities, given the usual incapacities of natives.

[temptestament]

And if I can get close enough to him to be able to pick out his individual consciousness without too much trouble, I should be able to find out one way or the other if I can affect what he sees without walking in front of him and hoping I can turn invisible.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth nods slowly and pulls out his phone.]

(If only it didn't seem necessary to rely on someone who uses such methods...)

I can provide you with the addresses of certain people who've stonewalled me in the past as a starting point.

That'd be a big help, yeah. And, ah...I'm sorry if the way I'm going about this seems kind of dirty. I'd be doing it completely differently if the situation didn't seem tough enough that I doubted I could afford to pull punches for the sake of fair play.

Your methods do seem questionable, but I see no more legitimate alternative. Furthermore, though I loathe to admit this, ultimately this investigation is extralegal -- we're looking into government officials concerning charges that the native justice system of this world is incapable of handling or even conceiving of for long.
