[Chances are, when you enter room 1202 of the Prosecutor's Office, you'll find High Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth hard at work. He learned the hard way not to be too quick to throw people out when they interrupt him, so as annoyed as he probably will be once he notices your presence, you'll more likely than not get a sufficient chance to justify yourself. Usually.]

[To help clarify the purpose of this post, this is someplace anyone can come tag me if they want -- just start a thread and specify Canonworth, TVKworth, or any other preference! Canons, AUs, OCs, and canon OCs welcome, both AA and non-AA!]

[He catches the choking, glancing over slightly. It's hard to tell with the mask, but he might be smiling?]

Ah, are you done, Edgeworth-san?

[Once Edgeworth finishes coughing and trying very hard not to spit-take, he begins glaring at the newcomer.]

Wh-who are you and what are you doing in my office?! Stop standing on my couch this instant!

Certainly.

[He replaces the case file, hopping down to the floor with barely a sound.]

My name is Oboro-maru. I came here because I was told you are a man who values truth.

[Mollified, the prosecutor manages to regather his composure.]

Yes, although I'm rarely consulted directly for such a reason.

[He makes his way over to the desk. The pitch of his voice combined with his height, now that it's accurately seen since he's not hunching, suggests this individual might be fairly young -- perhaps teenage?]

Perhaps, but this is a matter I must speak with you directly on. It is quite an unbelievable situation.

Then I assume that you've brought evidence of a similar magnitude.

Indeed.

[He places another case file -- where did he pull that from? -- on the desk, tilting his head curiously.]

I believe I managed to at least somewhat accurately put together the information I gathered in the way you are used to. I am afraid I am not familiar with how you organize your notes.

[...Well then. That was strange, but at least a vaguely pleasant surprise. Edgeworth takes the ersatz casefile with a nod.]

It would seem that you've planned this for some time.

[Flipping to the case summary now...]

There is little use in asking for help for such a strange thing unless you gather what facts there are, would you not agree?

[The case summary itself -- like the notes on the other pages in the file -- is written in an archaic form of Japanese. It seems to be fairly short, but in general details that the deaths in it, while unconnected at first, all have a very central cause, a single person responsible regardless of how the cases themselves were ruled. The other files are pieced together from information on various other murder cases around the world in the past few years -- some of the information being things this kid really shouldn't have access to -- which, as noted, don't seem to have much of anything to do with each other. There are notes carefully written on a few pages or added to some of the records themselves, some with arrows or question marks. It seems to list various names and -- oddly -- years, some of which are dating as far back as ancient China and as far forward as... hundreds of years from now? What is this?]

[While it takes some time for Edgeworth to adjust to the old dialect, the prosecutor does manage to slowly read it. At first he wonders if he's misreading parts thanks to it not being modern Japanese...]

[...but eventually, the casefile gets slammed down on the desk while Edgeworth levels a glare at the ninja.]

I don't know what you're playing at by engineering a prank this elaborate, but I don't appreciate my time being wasted.

[Oboro-maru seems perfectly calm, tilting his head ever so slightly.]

I assure you, it is far from a prank... and in fact, something very serious. I know the one who committed these acts -- he did the same to myself and others in various ways -- but I simply cannot find him. It was my hope that you would help.

And I certainly did not bring this without the intention to prove myself whatever way you wish me to.

It's impossible for you to be a murder victim given that you're alive!

(He has to be!...)

...Ah, forgive me. I spoke confusingly, I am sure. English is... somewhat difficult to grasp.

It was not to me, personally, but rather the one responsible murdered others, some of whom were close to my friends. You are correct in that I could not be here if he had killed me -- he had attempted to do so, but did not succeed in that attmept.

That only explains one matter -- there are several things about this so-called "case" that are patently absurd! To begin with, just how do you propose that only one person is responsible for crimes spanning the course of millennia?!

Because he was not in all those places at once. Instead, he controlled an incarnation of himself in each time period from a singular place -- to him, it was merely months, perhaps a few years, to put his plans into motion and manipulate these incarnations, but to others, it was centuries.

[Edgeworth sighs heavily in frustration while rubbing his temple, then grabs the phone receiver with his free hand and dials a four-digit number with one of the fingers of that hand.]

Yes, this is Edgeworth in room 1202. A rather slippery prankster is proving himself to be a nuisance.

[Don't mind Oboro-maru, Edgeworth, he's just going to be holding a phoenix over here --

-- wait a second. That actually is a phoenix. He's holding a literal bird of fire.]

A pity. It seems your reputation for truth is a lie itself. I had been afraid of that.

Curses, he's armed! With... with... (This can't possibly be as it appears! Yet a hologram can't radiate heat...!)

Y-you'll need to be prepared for fire. Nothing's yet been ignited, but the threat's been presented. Hurry!

[*click*]

You dare to question my convictions on the basis of my not accepting something like this?! What sort of evidence could possibly prove such a fantastical tale?!

What, indeed? Many things, if you are willing to look for them.

[He withdraws a piece of paper tied to a kunai, flicking it behind him to hit the door. True, illusion charms weren't his forte, but if he managed to inscribe that one right, the security would certainly find themselves having trouble locating Edgeworth's office. If he didn't, well... he'd simply have to make his way out.

The bird expands its wings, little embers floating off and dissipating into the air. Though Oboro shows no pain, the part of his glove the bird rests on is clearly scorched, though not burning.]

Certainly there are things even in this world that are not so easily explained. All I can say is that I speak the truth and would be glad to prove if to you if there was a certain way you would like me to.

[He lightly lifts his hands and the bird takes off, flying over to perch on the top of Edgeworth's chair. The heat is very noticeable if nothing else, yet the chair suffers no more than scorch marks in the shape of the bird's feet.]

[OK, something flying like that and still radiating heat, even leaving burn marks where it lands, crosses the line from "not as it seems" to "flashbacks to two and a half months ago" -- a glowing rock with impossible properties, a case whose only possible explanation silently set him at war with himself...

Edgeworth at least finds the presence of mind to give the bird some space, stepping out from behind his desk.]

E-even if that were the case, it certainly wouldn't be on such a grand scale, n-nor would it defy time.

Perhaps not here, but who is to say other such places lack such a thing? If there is even a possibility of what I speak of being true, would you not want to discover it?

Imagine, for a moment, that you do believe me. There is someone in this time that can expand his influence on any time he wishes. His only intention is to spread suffering. He can and will kill countless innocents for this goal and will only stop once he is made to.

I would say that is quite terrifying, do you not think?

(First time, and now parallel worlds... How much does this person expect me to believe?)

[Slowly:] Hypothetically speaking, any serial killer ought to be arrested, his guilt proven in court, and his sentence harsh and final.

I agree completely. That is why I came to you. Certainly, no one else would be willing to listen and I have had no luck in tracking him myself.
