[Chances are, when you enter room 1202 of the Prosecutor's Office, you'll find High Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth hard at work. He learned the hard way not to be too quick to throw people out when they interrupt him, so as annoyed as he probably will be once he notices your presence, you'll more likely than not get a sufficient chance to justify yourself. Usually.]

You could always also look up the number on my prosecutor's badge. They don't just hand out the numbers of the dead to the fresh new recruits, if I'm not mistaken.

Although that would prove useful were you a being of crude matter, how am I to know that anything on your... person cannot have its appearance manipulated at will?

Most certainly you cannot -- were a ghost capable of making such changes to the physical world directly, many cases would undoubtedly have differed dramatically. What I call into question is the reliability of your own appearance -- badge included.

However, I realize that badge numbers aren't common knowledge. To commit fraud, one needs the correct information. (Or, in some cases, the ability to intimidate others sufficiently to stifle questions.)

...well, I can tell you one thing. Due to...circumstances beyond my control, I don't have my badge with me.

[He shrugs, and spreads his hands out.]

So your proposal is to recite the number from memory, then.

You got it. I know my number by heart. [Or so Auste's headcanon says.] Ready?

[Edgeworth whips out his organizer and pen in order to take dictation.]

Indeed.

[And Byrne pronounces each number slowly and carefully. No hesitation. Even now he still remembers the number behind his badge.]

[Edgeworth nods, then armed with this data seats himself at his desk and starts typing at his laptop, checking the prosecution office's local database for a match.

Sure enough...]

Very well... Mr. Faraday.

[The words are nearly choked out, and tinged with discomfort and unease too great to hide.]

[And Byrne can't help but laugh a bit. And smile.]

I take it that's all for today about my identity?

That it is.

[Awkward silence HOW DOES I SHOULDN'T EXIST.]

[He nods, and decides to casually lean against the ladder by Edgeworth's shelves..]

[Tactic #1: Ignore and try to get back to work. Unfortunately, having his already-shaky convictions about the realities of the world toppled kiiinda makes it hard for him to concentrate.

[Well, that was the last thing Edgeworth expected to hear. He's so used to seeing trouble follow the Fey can that at first he's speechless at the reversal. Once he manages to find his train of thought and his voice, though:]

Does this concern the smuggling ring?

Yes, it does. You're the man who finally cornered the ringleader and brought him to justice.

It was far from a singular effort. As always, justice was the work of several individuals.

I know. I'd like to thank everyone else who worked toward this end...

[His eyes become wistful...possibly even misty as he lets out a sigh.]

[Edgeworth is silent at that, the reference by a ghost to said ghost's own child stirring some uncomfortable memories. He tries to push them back down again, then tries to divert the subject just slightly:]

Do you have a plan concerning how to contact Shi-Long Lang? His work calls for him to travel frequently.

Oh, don't worry about that. I have my ways.

[He grins mysteriously.]

Hmph. I presume that once this task is complete, you'll... be on your way, then?

Maybe. Or I could stick around for a bit longer.
