[Chances are, when you enter room 1202 of the Prosecutor's Office, you'll find High Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth hard at work. He learned the hard way not to be too quick to throw people out when they interrupt him, so as annoyed as he probably will be once he notices your presence, you'll more likely than not get a sufficient chance to justify yourself. Usually.]

[To help clarify the purpose of this post, this is someplace anyone can come tag me if they want -- just start a thread! Canons, AUs, OCs, and canon OCs welcome, both AA and non-AA!]

[Edgeworth whips out his organizer and pen in order to take dictation.]

Indeed.

[And Byrne pronounces each number slowly and carefully. No hesitation. Even now he still remembers the number behind his badge.]

[Edgeworth nods, then armed with this data seats himself at his desk and starts typing at his laptop, checking the prosecution office's local database for a match.

Sure enough...]

Very well... Mr. Faraday.

[The words are nearly choked out, and tinged with discomfort and unease too great to hide.]

[He nods, and decides to casually lean against the ladder by Edgeworth's shelves..]

[Tactic #1: Ignore and try to get back to work. Unfortunately, having his already-shaky convictions about the realities of the world toppled kiiinda makes it hard for him to concentrate.

Tactic #2: Try to take a (continued) work-like approach to the problem.]

[Well, that was the last thing Edgeworth expected to hear. He's so used to seeing trouble follow the Fey can that at first he's speechless at the reversal. Once he manages to find his train of thought and his voice, though:]

Does this concern the smuggling ring?

Yes, it does. You're the man who finally cornered the ringleader and brought him to justice.

It was far from a singular effort. As always, justice was the work of several individuals.

[His eyes become wistful...possibly even misty as he lets out a sigh.]

[Edgeworth is silent at that, the reference by a ghost to said ghost's own child stirring some uncomfortable memories. He tries to push them back down again, then tries to divert the subject just slightly:]

Do you have a plan concerning how to contact Shi-Long Lang? His work calls for him to travel frequently.

Oh, don't worry about that. I have my ways.

[He grins mysteriously.]

Hmph. I presume that once this task is complete, you'll... be on your way, then?

Maybe. Or I could stick around for a bit longer.

[Edgeworth pauses, wondering what to say to that. The first question to come to mind is what Byrne would do if he did stick around, but the answer there is obvious... and begs a question that isn't Byrne's to answer in turn, one painful enough to prompt the living prosecutor to turn his gaze away and grip his elbow. After feeling his heart clutch for a moment, a question finally does come out, one with an unintentional bitter edge:]

It is for me, I guess. [His tone is nonchalant, but there's an underlying uncertainty. Byrne casts a concerned eye over Edgeworth; was it something the older, ghostly prosecutor just said?]

[Edgeworth seems to realize his tone after the fact, and sighs.]

My apologies, Mr. Faraday. You aren't to blame.

It's all right - i-is anything wrong? [But knowing the famous DL-6 incident...knowing who this person was in front of him...]

[Edgeworth responds with a low, bitter, humorless chuckle.] ("Is anything wrong?", he asks.)

One would think our lives to be far simpler were it easy to simply remain.
